did it arch it's tail at all an exude a white liquid?

We used to call them devils coach man or just the devils beatle in Suffolk. My sister told me they would squirt venom in my eyes and make me blind.. didn't stop me liking them though

As usual fast replys many thanks for them. It didn't squirt any liquid but did arch it's back it was under on of the tins!

Ooh aar them old wives tales eh. Squirt Venom? When I was a kid I was told they were oil beetles that could squirt oil

Well, there is of course the bombardier beetle (Brachinus crepitans), producing noxious substances like hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinones, but I doubt even that one is any threat to Homo sapiens. At worst a burning finger tip, I guess. Never encountered it, actually.
